Distinguishing between ultimate reality (Paramattha) and concept (Pannatti) is very important in Vipassana meditation. Mentality (mind: feeling, perception, intention, consciousness) and matter (body: form) arise when conditions for their occurrence are met. They arise and disappear every moment while we are alive. In order to escape the suffering of birth, aging, illness, and death, we must be able to accurately recognize this mind and matter.
Physical pleasure (sukha)
Physical pain (dukha)
Mental joy (somanasa)
Mental dissatisfaction (domanasa)
Equanimity (upakkha)
It is difficult to distinguish between physical pain and mental suffering. There is an anecdote from the time of the Buddha that a bhikkhu was suffering from a sick body and was healed after hearing the Buddha's words (Bojjhanga sutta). Although the body is sick, the mind is light and does not suffer. This is the practical benefit of the Buddha's teachings in life.
That is why we must develop mindfulness (Sati), which allows us to see the body and mind separately, and cultivate wisdom.
Without awareness (Sati), we will remain in a state of ignorance, not knowing the feelings of many moments. Being ignorant means that one does not have wisdom at that moment. It is the difference between staying in a state of karma and acting, or knowing and acting with wisdom.
Without the right insight to see things as they are, it is difficult to correctly recognize what is beneficial and what is harmful.
If one does not obtain an object that is pleasant or satisfying to the senses, it is easy to get angry. This is because one does not have the right understanding of that object, the right insight into the conditions. If one has the insight to see things as they are with the right understanding, one will not get angry.
