Mind and Mind factors (Citta and Cetasika) 16: saññā (perception)1

The mental component called ‘perception (saññā)’ also occurs through the mind and the object at every moment. When experiencing an object, it ‘recognizes’ and ‘perceives’ it as its own unique role.
Unlike the mind that ‘knows’ the object, ‘perception’ plays the role of ‘perceiving’ the object. This is creating a ‘mark’ so that it can be recognized again later. It connects the present experience with the past experience and creates conditions so that it can be recognized again with the same experience in the future. By conceptualizing in this way, it plays the role of recognizing the object.
Since ‘perception’ plays its role when the object appears through the six senses, ‘perception’ is doing its job even at this moment.
It acts to ‘perceive’ the object at each moment when we see something, hear a sound, smell something, taste something, feel something, or have a thought.
Even when experiencing the same object, we perceive it differently. The same person may perceive the same object differently, and different people may perceive the same object with the same experience or experience it differently. Likes and dislikes are perceived differently by each person or according to conditions.
Those things recognized as different concepts accumulate to form habits or tendencies, and their own views are established. Buddhism refers to this as ‘the formation of karma/kamma.’
In order to be free from karma, the method is to observe the ‘perceptions’ that arise within oneself. If you can notice the perceptions that arise at every moment, you will greatly benefit from the development of wisdom through Vipassana meditation.
May the right views (Samma-Ditthi) arise through right mindfulness (Samma-Sati)!
May you develop your Sati through Vipassana!
