Mindfulness that ‘perceives’ the present moment with the right Sati is on a different level from ‘perception’ that thinks about reality. Beyond the state of mind of the world of desire mentioned in the previous letter no. 214, the ‘perception’ of the realm of form and the realm of formlessness that can be experienced through Jhana becomes more and more subtle.
In particular, the perception of the last stage of the realm of formlessness, “neither perception nor non-perception”, refers to an extremely subtle state.
Therefore, this is called “neither perception nor non-perception”.
Even in the supra-mundane mind after experiencing nirvana, there is this mind factor, ‘perception’. This is the realm of wisdom, which thoroughly recognizes that conditioned phenomena are impermanent, suffering, and non-self.
The state of complete disappearance of ‘perception’ is the beyond state of the 8th jhāna of the formlessness world, which is the state of extreme subtlety, where ‘perception (Saññā)’ and ‘feeling (Vedana)’ have disappeared.
This state is possible because the right view is established, and no mental defilements remain. This can be called experiencing nirvana. Only this state is the absolute state that can be called immortal or deathless.
This is to eliminate the unbeautiful, immoral, and harmful mental elements (akusala cetasika) and to develop the beautiful, moral, and beneficial mental elements (sobhana cetasika). This is done by developing one’s habits/tendencies (gati) to be good through the practice of learning and practicing the Dhamma.
In order to achieve the path of complete happiness, nirvana, we need practical practice. This is the four mindfulness practices suggested by the Buddha, Satipatthana.
In order to remove all the impurities and negativity that arise in the body and mind, we must establish the right sati and continue the awareness so that there is no more attachment or anger.
May a good heart be developed through right mindfulness (Samma-Sati), right effort (Samma-Vayama), and moderation!
May you develop the wisdom insight through Vipassana!
