The stronger the motivation for an action of body, speech, or mind, the stronger the karma that will later produce the consequences of that action. Good karma (kusala kamma) and bad karma (akusala kamma) have beneficial or harmful intentions (wholesome or unwholesome mind) and purposes that stimulate the action. These karmas accumulate and later produce the corresponding consequences.
Beneficial karma includes giving, precepts, and meditation. If we do not practice these, we are more likely to speak, think, or act harmfully or ignorantly. Therefore, we should always develop and practice these virtues.
Giving (Dana) can be more universal in terms of sharing the mind as well as material. Having a grateful heart, sharing one’s merits with others and all beings, and having the opportunity to rejoice together by giving will positively influence others to have a beneficial heart (wholesome mind). In this way, many beneficial resultants will follow.
The Buddha said that by observing precepts (Sila), one can be free from fear, hostility, and abuse. Being precepts means not committing evil deeds with one’s body or speech. The Buddha said that Sila (discipline) is a condition that is beneficial to oneself and others.
It is very difficult to preserve Sila without practicing vipassana, or Satipatthana. This is the protection of the sense organs from greed, hatred, and delusion. Through awareness, we should not allow the defilements such as attachment, anger, and ignorance to follow. For example, if we are absorbed in what we see, we become attached to it. Being restrained from the senses is awareness of nāma (mind) and rupa (matter), and this is the preservation of Sila: Base of Samadhi.
To be continued…
May a good heart be developed through right awareness (Samma-Sati), right effort (Samma-Vayama), and moderation!
May you develop the wisdom insight through Vipassana!
