Mind and Mind factors (Citta and Cetasika) 34: Jivitindriya (life faculty) 생명기능 1

The vital function (Jivitindriya), one of the universal mind factors that accompanies us every moment while we are alive, is characterized by ‘continuously protecting’. And it plays ‘a role in maintaining the life’ of the dhammas (objects) that accompany us.
All moments of the mind are made up of three very short split second.
The moment of arising (uppada khana)
The moment of staying (thiti khana)
The moment of disappearing (bhanga khana)
Even in a moment of mind that is faster than the moment of a light blinking, there are three moments of arising, staying, and disappearing. This is a dimension that is even finer than the unit of an atom. As one explains Buddhism by comparing it to quantum mechanics, Buddha already observed the blinking mind 2,600 years ago.
The life faculty, which is a mind factor, plays a role in maintaining the mind when it arises with the mind factors. The moment the mind arises, it arises together and stays together to maintain life. However, it cannot stay at the moment of disappearance and must disappear. It only functions while it stays.
The mind and the mind factor cannot arise without the life function that sustains their life. Likewise, the life function cannot arise without the mind factor that accompanies the mind.
When eye consciousness arises, the life faculty also comes with eye consciousness. Eye consciousness also needs life faculty. When eye consciousness disappears, the life faculty that follows it also disappears, and when another mind arises, the life faculty that follows it plays its role. This is the same function as when individual dots come together to create a line.
