Wisdom Insight Letter No. 236
Mind and Mind factors (Citta and Cetasika) 34: Jivitindriya (life faculty) 생명기능 3

Through the previously understood life faculty (Jivitindriya) mind factor, we can think about one life. Just as a single cell that maintains our body dies every moment and a new cell is created, the vital function (Jivitindriya), the mind factor, also arises for a moment and disappears.
Just as we cannot live a life and continue to live without dying, the vital function (Jivitindriya) also disappears. Since we cannot hold on to it or leave it with our will, there is no such thing as ‘mine’ or ‘me’ here. There is no lasting matter or mind here. It is just a conditioned phenomenon that arises and disappears. Therefore, there is nothing to cling to.
The vital function (Jivitindriya) is a sankhara dhamma, a conditioned dhamma, and it cannot remain forever, nor is it a substantial self. It is just a function.
As we study the reality of the life faculty, we realize that just as it exists for a very short moment and disappears as soon as the conditions are met, a life is also just a moment when we look back after several decades.
All we can do is look at this. If you know this principle of seeing and disappearing, you will be able to live comfortably without attachment. This is the principle of Vipassana. This will be the practical life of sila, samadhi and pannya.
To be continued…
May a good heart be developed through right awareness (Samma-Sati), right effort (Samma-Vayama), and moderation!
May you develop the wisdom insight through Vipassana!
