Wisdom Insight Letter No. 239
Mind and Mind factors (Citta and Cetasika) 39: Vinnana (Consciousness) & 7 universal mind factors 1
The Korean Wisdom Insight Letter: click here 지혜통찰편지
Up until last week, we studied the 7 mind factors that always occur together with the mind at every moment out of the 52 mind factors. Let’s review the 7 universal factors again. Mind/thought (citta) does not occur without these seven mental factors.
Sense contact (phassa)
Feeling/sansation (vedanā)
Perception/cognition (saññā)
Intention (cetanā)
Concentration (ekaggata)
Life function (jivitindriya)
Attention (manasikāra).
Each mind factor has its own unique characteristics, role, manifestation, and close cause. Each has different characteristics and performs its own role simultaneously. It is constantly performing its role that allows mind and matter to act, and it is performing its role simultaneously with the mind at this very moment. In this way, it shares the same object with the mind.
When the mind arises according to the conditions appropriate for each of the existence realms (the world of desire, form, and formlessness), the related mind factors arise simultaneously. The mind factor never arises alone. It always arises together with the mind and other mind factors. As explained earlier, when a king comes forward, his subjects always follow him.
Close your eyes right now and notice what sensations you are feeling. I hope you will take the time to notice and focus on what is happening in your body and mind at least once a day.
May a good heart be developed through right awareness (Samma-Sati), right effort (Samma-Vayama), and moderation!
May you develop the wisdom insight through Vipassana!
