Knowing Abhidhamma is very helpful in understanding the Buddha's words completely and realizing Nirvana. In it, both mind and matter are analyzed in microscopic detail. The major events related to the process of life and death are explained.
Abhidhamma examines the two compounds of mind and matter, so-called existence, and helps us understand things as they are. By observing and analyzing the phenomena of mind and matter, we learn how and under what conditions they develop. We thoroughly understand whether they function beneficially or harmfully, and we see the indicators for reaching the noble Nirvana.
Abhidhamma is the higher teaching of the Buddha. It explains the essence of his profound doctrine and deals with the ultimate truth. It helps us understand the four ultimate truths and apply them concretely in our practice. It dismantles and decomposes the reality of the Dhamma, and sees them down to the smallest unit that cannot be further decomposed.
It classifies these smallest units into four ultimate realities, the Paramattha.
Cittta - one mind
Cetasika - 52 mental factors
Rūpa - 28 matter
Nibbāna - the state of Nirvana
In the early suttas, the Buddha speaks of the Dhamma as the object of the sixth sense organ, the mind, perceiving and acting upon the five sense functions of the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and body. Through this, the phenomena of mind and matter, which are objects, become meaningless without the function of the mind. Therefore, the beginning of the Abhidhamma begins with the classification of the mind, citta. We will learn about the classification of mind next week.
We have not yet overcome death. With the understanding of life and death, I hope that we can understand the phenomena of mind and matter, practice insight, and attain the cessation of suffering.
May you develop the wisdom insight through Vipassana!
