In Letter No. 241, we discussed the specific method of observing the mind in the Buddha's Maha-satipatthana sutta.
Among the four paramatthas (ultimate reality: mind, mental factors, matter, and nibbana) introduced in the higher teaching of the Buddha, the Abhidhamma, the mind is classified from various perspectives.
First, the mind is broadly classified into the three realms of the world (the world of desire, form, and formlessness) and the super-worldly mind that experiences nirvana with the conditions to transcend the three realms.
‘The mind of the worldly realm’ refers to the state of the mind that has greed, hatred, and delusion. It shows the state of consciousness of the Sensuous-Sphere and through experienced meditation the Form-Sphere or Formless-Sphere.
Lokiya Cittāni: Mundane minds (total 81)
Kāmāvacaraṃ: minds pertaining to the Sensuous-Sphere (54)
Rūpāvacaraṃ : minds pertaining to the Form-Sphere (15)
Arūpāvacaraṃ: minds pertaining to the Formless-Sphere (12)
Even if you experience jhāna, you still If you are not able to remove the source of the mind's pollution (greed, hatred, and delusion), you will be born and live in that world. But when the life-span is over, the being will be born again in the three realms and will not be able to escape the cycle of rebirth in the three realms. This shows the existing Indian tradition and is against the fundamental teachings of the Buddha.
‘The Supra-mundane mind’ is a state of mind that has experienced nirvana (the cessation of greed, hatred, and delusion) and refers to the mind of the four stages of enlightenment. Since it is explained by being classified as the path (magga) and fruit (phala) that helps enlightenment, it can be classified into the following eight minds.
Lokuttara Kusala / Vipāka (resultant) Cittāni: Supra-mundane minds (8)
Sotāpatti-magga / phala cittaṃ: Stream enter-er of Path / Fruit mind
Sakadāgāmi-magga / phala cittaṃ: One returner of Path / Fruit mind
Anāgāmi-magga / phala cittaṃ: Non returner of Path / Fruit mind
Arahatta-magga / phala cittaṃ: Perfected one of Path / Fruit mind
What kind of mind are you currently experiencing?
And what conditions caused that mind to arise?
What causes that mind to arise?
May the wisdom of insight arise through a right understanding of yourself in daily meditation!
