Last week we learned about the twelve unwholesome states of mind that can arise in the world of desire. This week, we will classify the eight types of mind that arise from greed, hatred, and delusion.
Quotes from chapter 1 in Abhidhammattha Sangaha
8 consciousness are rooted in Attachment (lobha-mūla-cittāni) in 12 Unwholesome mind (Akusala Cittāni)
1. One consciousness, unprompted, accompanied by pleasure, and connected with the wrong view. (Somanassa-sahagataṃ, diṭṭhigatasampayuttaṃ, asaṅkhārikam ekaṃ)
2. One consciousness, prompted, accompanied by pleasure, and connected with the wrong view. (Somanassa-sahagataṃ, diṭṭhigatasampayuttaṃ, sasaṅkhārikam ekaṃ)
3. One consciousness, unprompted, accompanied by pleasure, and disconnected with the wrong view. (Somanassa-sahagataṃ diṭṭhigatavippayuttaṃ asaṅkhārikam ekaṃ)
4. One consciousness, prompted, accompanied by pleasure, and disconnected with the wrong view. (Somanassa-sahagataṃ diṭṭhigatavippayuttaṃ sasaṅkhārikam ekaṃ)
5. One consciousness, unprompted, accompanied by indifference, and connected with the wrong view. (Upekkhāsahagataṃ, diṭṭhigatasampayuttaṃ asaṅkhārikam ekaṃ)
6. One consciousness, prompted, accompanied by indifference, and connected with the wrong view. (Upekkhāsahagataṃ, diṭṭhigatasampayuttaṃ, sasaṅkhārikam ekaṃ)
7. One consciousness, unprompted, accompanied by indifference, and disconnected with the wrong view. (Upekkhāsahagataṃ, diṭṭhigatavippayuttaṃ, asaṅkhārikam ekaṃ)
8. One consciousness, prompted, accompanied by indifference, and disconnected with the wrong view. (Upekkhāsahagataṃ, diṭṭhigatavippayuttaṃ, sasaṅkhārikam ekaṃ)
As seen in the above eight types of mind, diṭṭhi, i.e. the presence or absence of views, is an important condition.
So what is the right view?
Diṭṭhi means whether or not one's own stubbornness or sannyā is working. Right view (the first of the Noble Eightfold Path) means not being stubborn about oneself, that is, not being affected by the ego.
Even fleeting thoughts are detailed and generated by these conditions. It may be difficult for those who are new to it, but I hope that through deeper reflection, it will become the basis of right view!
I hope that through the above quotes from Abhidhammattha-Sangaha, you will observe citta (mind) every day and deepen your practice.
May you achieve fruitful results in this life!
To be continued…
May a good heart be developed through right awareness (Samma-Sati), right effort (Samma-Vayama), and moderation!
May you develop the wisdom insight through Vipassana!
